Lal Zimman is Assistant Professor of Linguistics and Affiliated Faculty in Feminist Studies at UC Santa Barbara. His research takes an interdisciplinary approach to language, identity, and embodiment with a focus on transgender communities in the United States. He takes a mixed methods approach to this work, drawing variably on ethnography, sociophonetics, discourse analysis, and experimentation. One of his primary goals is the discovery of productive connections between sociocultural linguistic theory and struggles for social justice in which language plays a central role.
